HEAT STROKE

Thanks for the warning heather,

This poor dog we both know, the trip in my book was not necessary considering said dog had been poorly for some time & was in no fit state to travel ..... the owner needs to be shot in my book, should know better & cannot in anyway give me ANY JUSTIFABLE reason to do that trip which would have taken nearly 5 hours just to get to her destination .. i am disgusted & appauled at her lack of consideration/care for this poor boy :'(

my vet saw 7 over the weekend all dead now

I have witnessed a dog die of heatstroke at work, and it truly is a horrendous thing to see

we have to be so so careful in this heat, and if it means that the dogs don't get walked then so be it, our two yesterday were panting their asses off in the house, and they'd not even been out, luckily our house is pretty cool, all blinds and fans, they did get a walk but not until 9.30 last night, and it was really enjoyable, a nice cool breeze.

well, said person doesnt feel responsible would you believe!! the cheek of even saying that is beyond comprehension! PLUS the dog was sick, by her own admission ... its the fact she knew the dog was in distress & didnt stop until her destination even after being told several times by someone ..... THAT makes her responsible im afraid!

I will be clipping out the undercarriages of the dogs we do show & completely clip out the poor preggers Millie.
We clipped Odin's undercarriage & it really helped

I agree with Kathy whole heartedly. The dog in question was known to be unwell, so who in their right mind would undertake such a journey on the hottest day of the year. The weather forecasters for the last few days have been right about the weather, so this should have been sufficient warning. As I have mentioned elsewhere, a well known breeder of Newfoundlands was prosecuted a few years ago and lost everything!
Our dogs rely on us totally for their well-being and their welfare should be paramount. We are their guardians. I cannot get this poor dog out of my mind and hope he did not suffer.
Like Heather, I have clipped the fronts and bellies of our dogs, which does give them some relieve. The hosepipe is out regularly cooling them down and thank god we have tiled floors everywhere.

Its hard not to get into discussion isnt it LOL .. i have been chomping at the bit since i heard what had happened. I also know that the dog was still standing within 10 mins of him leaving (not what was reported!!) & was in distress the entire way of her final 100 mile, 2hr journey! He apparently knocked off his small blue cage fans & therefore was only left with the roof ventilator, which is an extractor if they are the same as mine, in a fully boarded out small van. This person STILL continued on her journey knowing her dog was in a distressed state as she was on the motorway & apparently had no where to stop???!!!!!! I feel very strongly about this, & have to vent my anger sorry peeps!

as said its upto us to look after our dogs they dont drive us to shows we drive them!

as for not being able to stop on a motorway thats crap! aat some point very soon after there would be somewhere to stop and yes to me it is a emergency and i would stop anywhere if need be!

it sounds to me like the said person has the showing bug and wanted a rosette to add to the collection at any cost

She wasnt on the way to a show, she was having semen collected to preserve for a future breeding as she knew he didnt have long left bevcause of his illness

to clip a dog would you then be ok to show it? where exactly would you start and stop and is this only roughs?

then she should have called the "collector" to her and enjoyed what time she had left

or even called a vet to do a call out and collect it?

so getting semen was more important than a happy comfortable dog for its last few hours with her?



weve many times pulled over either when potty trainig the kids or the dogs barking mad for a wee or even morning sickness it can be done pretty much anywhere ok its a risk but it needed to be done if she had broke down she would have stopped where she was without chioce but with choice she choose not too!

Well said person rang her to see if she wanted to cancel due tot he hear & her being pregnant, but she was already an hour 1/2 away from him .... He saw the dog & she asked for WATER to give him on arrival ... that to mw says she didnt either have any or not enough with her??

He attempted vaguely to collect, the dog wasnt happy so he said he wasnt going to try any more .... he was given another drink & walked about in the shade for a bit before hse carried on on her journey.

Bearing in mind his illness, his treatment would have meant collection would have been pointless anyway! He wasnt well enough ... ugh .. im in despair over the whole thing!

Ive cancelled my hipscoring tomorrow as im worried with the sedation they will be out of it too much to pant or get up & move about if they are hot!!

depending on the illness your right it wouldnt have been good idea

and not to have water is such a stupid mistake

i dont blame you for cancelling dora was sound asleep for a good few hours after and its not asif hip scoring is a medical emergency!

I never clip our roughs all over - only their fronts and bellies with a 30 clipper blade and keep their featherings and their trousers and skirts short and no, they would not be shown like this.

There are sooo many aspects to this that are so shocking and appalling!

The only things that come to mind are "flaming" statements.... So I'll just keep my mouth shut.

id love to know who she is who the dog is and what it was dying of????

then what treatment it was getting for the illness and how tht would affect the sperm?

This is quite simply APPALLING!!

The simple fact of the matter is that we are, as Karen put it so well, completely responsible for our dogs. This owner needs some fundamental training in the responsibilities of canine ownership if she doesn't have the humanity or common sense to do what is right for the dogs in her care. Dogs are sentient beings and NOT, NOT, NOT commodities. WE are the priviliged ones to have their companionship - not vice versa. I could go on...

We have to be SO careful in these temperatures. Hannibal had a vet appointment on Tuesday afternoon in the scorching heat. I took 12 pints of water with us, put a wet towel under him (Cheri's suggestion) and had all the windows and sunroof of the estate open. The journey was 1/2 hour each way. Even with these precautions he was tired out when we got home. The vet asked me to trot him up and down outside and I had to refuse on the grounds that it would be too dangerous. I did trot him gently in the air conditioned waiting room.

We are still walking Han in the mornings but only because he just loves diving down into the river, getting thoroughly wet and then having an amble in the shade. This morning I drove him the few hundred yards up the road to the river because the walk along the road is in full sun. I then leave him pretty damp and he seems content to either rest in the shade or come in and flop on the tiles by his fan.

I'm not saying that I get things right for Han all the time but I hope that I think things through, recognise and assess his needs and do my best for him - oh yes, and love him to bits!!

Does a/c not come standard in the vehicles in the UK?

My A/C in the SUV blow ice cold air and mine are quite comfortable going everywhere with me as long as I dont have to stop. If I have to get out of the car and they cant come with me, they dont go. I am just having a really hard time wrapping my mind around this whole thing!

I stopped walking mine after we went to the yard sales (like a boot sale but in your front yard) and the driveways were too hot and burning their pads. I took them home and put on their shoes to go back out and it wasn't even that warm out. They wont get walked again til their Ruffwear Swamp Coolers get here.(although today i may walk them as the temps have been quite nice, its only 19°c right now)

aircon is not standard
we have aircon and it works ok but a vans aircon isnt enough

we can take one dog safely in the car with aircon without it getting hot at all

however to move a few dogs in a van is a very hard job without alot of kit!
