puppy coat types from "mixed " parents

More and more people are asking about what type coat should be expected so it would be handy if anyone who has bred a rough to smooth could give the details of the puppies coat types

also any smooth to smooth mating that produced rough puppies


so ill start...............



litter of ten ( 6 girls 4 boys)
smooth dam and sire
3 roughs 7 smooths (2 bitches and 1 dog were rough)



litter of 5
smooth dam and sire
all 5 were smooth

smooth dam and sire
2 roughs 1 smooth (all boys

Ben's litter was a mating of 2 roughs, and out of 10 pups, only 3 were rough, the other 7 were smooth.

Don't have any experience with breeding myself, so I'm interested to hear what others have to say!

Emma is from a smooth mum and a rough dad and she is a rough, but I wouldn't say as rough as some other Saints I have seen....apart from the bushiest tail ever.

Aren't they called "Smurfies"?

Flo is from a smooth dam and rough sire and she is smooth. However her breeder called her a Smurfie.

Some smooths carry the smooth dominant gene ... therefore if he or she is mated to a rough coat, the pups would still be majority smooths.

Lady is from a Rough x Smooth mating & her littermates were nearly all smooth bar 2 (out of 8 ) & her brother sired a litter to a rough coat bitch & they were all smooth bar 2 & that was a litter of 10. Ladys sire bred a rough coat bitch & they were majority smooths too ... so safe to say clarly the smooth gene is dominant in that line!

This is interesting reading material. I actually wanted to ask the same question.

I only had one 'mixed' breeding historically. Smooth dam x rough sire = 7 pups of which 2 was smooth.
The same bitch is pregnant again by a different sire, and we'll have puppies over this weekend, so we'll see what we'll get!

Just an update. My last litter was a litter of 4, and I was hoping for atleast 1 smooth.
I got 2 smooth and 2 rough. And the smooths were different sexes, so I could 'choose'... Nice... A 50/50 split!

just produced me 50/50 rough and smooth.... and i didnt want a rough!

so dream whos rough from 2 smooth parents, and homer whos smooth from 2 smooth parents had 5 puppies ALL ROUGH!!!

then daphne whos smooth from 2 smooth parents and dexter whos smooth from one rough one smooth parent had 10 pups 9 smooth one rough!!!


kinda gutted dreams are rough but either way they are yummy

Jessie and Jackson are both smooths but out of mixed parents (both mums were rough coats and dads smooth) have produce 2 smooths and a 1 rough. and they are all beauties
