General Characteristics
The ideal Owner/Breeder/Handler is a energetic, far sighted creature with the courage and preservence of a hound and a natural antipathy for losing.
He/She appears nearly awkward nor clumsy, as a certain amount of speed and agility is needed while doing his/her thing. They are usually found in packs at dog shows.
Head
The width between the ears varies from wins or loses.
Surmounted by a topknot of long or short hair, either straight, wavy or rather curly, on ocassion may be thinning on top or completely bald, but the latter variety is rare.
The male species is sometimes bearded.
Nose
A pinkish tinge during the summer months should not penalise an otherwise first class specimen.
Ears
In proportion to the head. Ability to listen while in the company of elder and better breeders, is greatly desired.
Eyes
May appear slightly crossed from watching the dog, Judge , direction of travel and fellow exhibitors all at the same time.
Mouth
Large enough to put foot into.
A slight bulge denotes a liver complaint.
Body
Short-Coupled Variety; usually plump and well padded in hind quarters, Shabbiness to be penalised.
Long - Coupled Variety; Lean and sinewy. Extra size being no advantage in either variety as long as it does not interfere with freedom of action.
Shoulders
Never drooping , broad enough for slapping or crying on.
Back
Muscular and Strong, Occasional stiffness due to leaning over, Grooming and Washing their Saints.
Chest
Plenty of Heart Room.
Forearm
Flexible and Well Muscled! More noticeable when their Saint Bernard gets Larger or when owning a pack.
Hands
Attached to leashes, Brushes, Bibs and Towels.
May be coloured from being wrung over losses and applauded over wins.
Nails
A working specimen will have short chewed nails, signs of length or loss shall be penalised accordingly.
Legs & Feet
Very Muscular and flexible, Endurance is of great importance.
Colour
Immaterial, Green denoting Envy or red colour denoting rage is a disqualification.
Temperament
Aloof and dignified, even elegant while working, a cheerful, spirited and tractable disposition desired while in the company of the pack.
Shyness among strangers is not considered a fault .
However viciousness in any degree is a disqualification.
