Hotspots...

Oscar is 8 months old but for the last 3 months he has been getting what looks like hot spots (sores, oozing and painful). We have had him at the vet 3 times and he was treated successfully (short term) on those occasions with antibiotics, steroids and creams. The vet also did a skin test last week, results were negative.
Oscar did have fleas over 3 months ago and the vet has told us that he believes it is a flea reaction. We have however treated him every 3 weeks with frontline and have treated the environment inc. our couch and got him a new kennel. Oscar is very affected by the hotspots and changes from being a very active and affectionate dog to a withdrawn dog. The vet said he will just prescribe another antibiotic should it return again. Has anyone had a similar experience or have any advice?

Eczema can be fairly common. It can be caused by an alergic reaction to flea bite but also it can be caused by too much Protein in the food. You must also make sure that the dog is completely dried if He has been out in the Rain or Bath.
Be careful when putting Cream on This, It can easily spread to other places. Delute some Salvon and wash the whole area everyday. I personally do not like to use Antibotics on Dogs for too long as they can become immune to them and stronger doses have to be given .

we also mix up some epsom salts and warm water and sponge it onto the skin , this is non-stinging and we just have good results.

hi try useing advcate instead of frontline you can get it from your vet .frontline used to make my saint get sore patches.advcate is used for many things including flea control heart worm and lungworm ..

I just had the SAME thing happen with Brutus and Rufus... flea allergy. My vet said that a single bite can cause a flair up for months until the immune system is calmed. They switched us off Frontline to Vectra. There have been alot of frontline resistance in the states this year.

Thanks Lora, fingers crossed Oscar has not had any reaction in 2months. It is the longest time since we got him. He becomes so out of sorts. Not nice for him (or me to watch him )

What are the common skin problems for Saint Bernards? My dog has severe shedding before but it stop with the use of oatmeal soap.
