Here are two short video clips showing Norm's wobbly hocks. Norm has hip dysplasia and to compensate he hyperextends his hocks. He has been in weekly physio/hydrotherapy since he was 6 months old. Although he's built up a lot of muscle in his rear, there is nothing that can be done to correct the hyperextension of his hocks. We tried a brace early on, but the orthopedic specialist warned us it may do more harm than good. They have told us repeatedly that the wobbly hocks do not cause Norm any pain. We will revisit the possibility of hip replacement surgery when he is 2 (August 2011). Unfortunately hip replacement surgery will not correct the hyperextension, his wobbly hocks are here to stay.

He almost looks like he has double-jointed knees!

He seems like a happy fellow though, and if he's not in pain, I wouldn't be too worried! Glad his therapy has helped though!

Just being curious but what was his Sire & Dams Hip score results ? I know it can happen when parents are completely Clear but still curious. and has he had access to the steps in your video from an early age ?

Pretty sure his sire has the same issues.... I'm sure she'll will be along to confirm.... I think I remember questionin why the dog was used at stud. But he isn't shels dog! So not her fault.

Norm's sire has the same issue, but to a much lesser degree. Neither his dam or sire had hip scores done. I only know of one kennel in North America that is checking all of their breeding stock prior to breeding, unfortunately it is a rarity on this side of the pond... at least with Saints. (My Newfs and future Wolfhound pup come from lines that were tested and cleared). Norm's half sister (same sire) and half brother (same sire) both have the same condition, but again, to a lesser degree... but they are both smaller than Norm.

We live in a bunglow and the only steps are those three. The steps are at the opposite end of the house and Norm was always supervised when he was near them, at least until he was 5-6 months of age. He was taught to navigate the stairs, but he wasn't allowed to go up/down freely. I've raised four Newf pups and one Dane pup without orthopedic issues. I really don't think I could've done anything to prevent the hip dysplasia.

Cheri, I completely missed these replies... I didn't want you thinking I was ducking to avoid having to respond... and thank you for clearning things up. So many people seem to think "I did" or "didn't do" something that inadvertantly caused Norm's hip dysplasia.

shell.... i have to say i was disperpointed to see the reply to this post from you..... i was hoping it was a picture of norm Very Happy hehehehehehe

i dont think its more people trying to blame you ( although i do know exactly what you mean ive had a hideous dog experience this week ) but more they are trying to work out if there something that could be done differently next time

normally i would have left it to you to reply but did feel i wanted to add it wasnt your breeding as you hadnt ( at that point)

norms size although you keep him trim ( as all dogs should be and thats a whole different subject that drives me mad!) is of course more than likely why his is worse than his siblings ...... thank god you got him and are "dealing" with it so well

you should be very proud of what youve done with norm i have to say i bet alot of people would have soon dumped him, where as you are taking the bull by the horns and going with it!!!

go shell!!!

cheri

ps WHERES the pictures! Smile

Cheri, I have to admit I'm overly sensitive when it comes to Norm. Sadly, I've had people tell me "he'd be better off dead" or heard people whispering, "that's so cruel, they should put him down" with regards to Norm's gait (hyperextension of the hocks). Initially I tried to educate people and explain that the hyperextension is not causing him pain, but I quickly learned these people had their opnions set in stone and nothing I could say or do would change that.

The same videos I shared here went viral in the Saint community (with people sharing them on forums, and publishing them on Facebook, without mention of his therapy or diagnosis) and I was inundated with replies about "that poor dog". Although Norm's hyperextension looks horrid (and I'm the first to point that out), he is a very happy, fun-loving boy, and we celebrate every day with him. Although his gait looks horrible and his x-rays even worse, Norm is oblivious to it and he is currently pain-free and enjoying life to the fullest.

Norm was neutered last week, so there is no chance he'll be sharing his genes with progeny.

I just got a new lens for my camera, but am heading out to a dog show (Wolfhounds) shortly, will try to get some photos of Norm this afternoon or tomorrow. Hopefully it will warm up a bit too, yesterday it was close to -30ยบ with the wind chill... brrr.

I was just asking a question Question
Wasnt blaming anyone, As this is a forum for people with Saints to learn more about the breed, I think it is good that people will ask questions

Asking questions is great, and yes, it is exactly why forums are such a great place. I apologize, I have been overwhelmed by people questioning how I raised Norm, insinuating that I've done something wrong. The stairs and the floor (kitchen), as well as his diet, were blamed for his orthopedic issues, and in turn, the finger was pointed at me for allowing him access to stairs or a hard/slippery floor or feeding him the wrong food. I didn't expect to have to defend myself (not by your question, but the 50 others that came before), and again, I admit I've become very defensive when questions are open ended, leaving others to wonder if there was something that could've been done to prevent the orthopedic issues.

I shared Norm's video and progress because (I have since found out) there are a LOT of Saints with similar issues... but owners were fearful or ashamed to share with others. Since I know of of at least two other pups from the same sire (and three different dams) all have the same condition, but were fed different diets and raised in different environments, I can safely say that it wasn't something I did, or didn't do, that caused Norm's issues... but in all fairness to those that pose questions... they do not know of Norm's history, his sire and siblings, so of course, questions are the only way to learn.

Again... please accept my most sincere apology.

Shel

No Problem Shel , From reading my question I posted first, it could of easily been taking up as Blaming you, sorry it was not the case. That's the problem sometimes with writing things Wink
Yes you are right, alot more people are coming forward with similar issues. Norm seems to be getting on great! Keep up the good work
