how many matings and when ?

ok some people mate a bitch on cirtain days and some premate

but how many matings do you do?

the most common seen to be 2 matings a day apart

some people are trying 3 matings a day apart and some are mating every day the bitch will stand?

what do you do and why?

If you use the Idexx progesterone test, its quite accurate & only ONE mating is needed as it pinpoints her ovulation time. But you could still do 2

If pre-mate swab then i do 2 matings 48hrs apart.

we use premate blood tests and the vet always tells us to do 2 matings a day apart

Is the pre-mate swab the same as ovulation test pads (http://www.ovulationpads.info/), has anyone used these? did you find them to be accurate? or do you prefer the progesterone blood test?

i have tried the idexx test however the bitch missed and it appears different stud owners feel it should read different levels for when to mate


this mating game can be a total nighmere from now on im not premating or idex testing or swabbing any bitch i own if im mating it to a dog i own! instead im listening to my boys and seeing what happens from there!

admittedly if you mate a few days then you have a longer due date but the vets can now take a small amount of blood and tell you if the bitch will whelp in 24 or 48 hours or to re test.... help when deciding to go in for a section i suppose ( this is not something i have done but a friend in the breed has done a few times with sucess)
